With so many wonderful authors contributing to From the Heart, we thought it appropriate to thank each of them individually. During this, our three month “Summer Sales Drive, ” we will be periodically recognizing our unique and talented contributors. Today, we hope you will enjoy getting to know Keri Houchin, author of the blog “One Mama’s Daily Drama” which can be found at www.OneMamasDailyDrama.com.
Keri Houchin was born Keri Taylor in Ft. Worth, Texas on November 25th, 1983. She is the eldest of four children and spent the majority of her childhood on the family farm in nearby Grandview, TX. Keri and her siblings spent many an afternoon recreating their favorite stories as plays with Keri writing the “scripts”.
After graduating at the top of her class from Grandview High School, Keri went on to pursue a Bachelor’s degree in Cross-Cultural Studies at Howard Payne University in Brownwood, Texas. There she met Erin Houchin, a fellow member of the marching band, and they immediately fell in love. They married on May 17th, 2003 and now have two children: Abigail and Elijah. After graduating, they moved to Ft. Worth so that Erin could pursue a Master’s Degree at Brite Divinity School.
Meanwhile, Keri spent a whirlwind year at night school earning an Associate’s Degree in Culinary Arts. She has worked a variety of jobs since then. Everything from food service, retail sales, and even the Census! Keri’s passion, however, has always been writing. She is currently living her dream, working from home as a freelance writer for Examiner.com, where she writes about free events, money-saving strategies, and parenting news in Ft. Worth.
This Fall both Abigail and Elijah will be in school for the first time. Although, as a mom, Keri is apprehensive of spending each day at home alone, she is also anticipating the increased time she will have to write.
You can follow her progress and read more at Examiner.com (Ft. Worth Frugal Family Examiner) and at www.OneMamasDailyDrama.com.
Keri has always had a love of books. “Reading,” she say, “is like an adventure. You just get pulled into the story and you never know where it will take you.” For as long as she can remember, Keri has been trying to create her own “adventure.”
We are lucky enough to have Keri featured in our upcoming title, From the Heart: A Collection of Stories and Poems from the Front Lines of Parenting. Although she writes almost daily on her blog, Keri had some great thoughts about contributing to our book.
“Anyone with a child will tell you that kids get sick all the time and medical care is expensive. Both [of my children,] Abigail and Elijah were born premature. Without the excellent care they received from the hospitals, doctors, and nurses, my story would likely be much different.” We are so lucky to have someone with such a personal story out there willing to share their words with us.
Keri writes almost daily for Examiner.com and on One Mama’s Daily Drama, but as far as projects go, she is working on an ebook. “I have so many people asking me questions on my blog about how I do what I do that I feel like many people would benefit from a ‘couponing 101’ book. I’m trying to give a simple introduction that anyone, regardless of how much coupon and bargain shopping they have done, can benefit from.”
Keri is also a big fan of NaNoWriMo (National Novel Writing Month) which takes place every year in November. The goal is to write 50 thousand words in just 30 days! “It’s a daunting challenge, but it really forces you to just write and not worry about editing as you go. I’ve participated in the past and this most recent year, my daughter participated too. The Young Writer’s Program was created to encourage children of all ages to write too. I’d encourage anyone who has ever thought of writing fiction to give it a try. You may surprise yourself! http://www.nanowrimo.org/
